Creating a love for learning

WELCOME TO ST MARY'S INFANT SCHOOL

St Mary's is a Church of England Infant School for 4 - 7 year olds.  It is situated in the rural village of Shackleford on the outskirts of Godalming, Surrey and a maximum of 90 children attend the school. The school is housed in an historic building which was first opened the mid nineteenth century. Some of the classrooms overlook fields and farmland, giving the school a real connection with the countryside, and the children are able to use this open spaces for special events.

In our recent OFSTED inspection visit (February 2023) the inspector commented

'Happiness can be seen in pupils’ eagerness to learn and when playing outside. Many pupils comment about kindness. Everyone looks out for each other, and new pupils settle in quickly. Bullying does not worry pupils because it rarely happens.'

At St Mary's we aim to create a love for learning in each child that will be life-long.  We believe that this is possible by producing a range of inspirational teaching and learning experiences within a safe, caring and vibrant environment.

Our curriculum is exciting, up-to-date and practical with an emphasis on the development of creativity across the curriculum.

We believe that our school environment reflects our success in learning, providing a well-resourced and organised place to be.

As a Christian school we promote caring for each other and learning together and believe links with the church, local community and wider world are essential.

We recently entered into a collaboration with St James Primary School in Elstead, which has allowed us all to work together on continually improving the teaching and learning in both schools.

We believe children learn best when they are happy.  We hope that this website will give you a clear understanding and vision of how we are "Creating a Love for Learning" at St Mary's School.

Executive Headteacher

'Pupils love the longstanding traditions at St Mary’s. Teachers immerse pupils in the natural world and make excellent use of the picturesque rural surroundings. Pupils are very lucky to have unique experiences that they will remember for years to come. Pupils are part of a caring community where they feel safe and at ease.'
