Building our body strength is very important for handwriting. Particularly our pelvic and shoulder girdle strength. Building strength in these areas enables children to sit still and concentrate without wriggling (for a reasonable amount of time). It enables children to sit correctly at their tables and to develop a comfortable pencil hold so that they are able to write with speed (eventually) and legibility.
Any physical activity which involves balancing, climbing, jumping, hopping and skipping is helpful. In school we practise ‘Animal Positions’. These help our muscles and ligaments to work together to create stability.
